What does the science say? 

The Yoga For Healthy Lower Backs (YHLB) programme is a safe and highly beneficial treatment for chronic lower back pain, according to the largest research trial on yoga to date, worldwide. 


Funded by Arthritis Research UK, the University of York set up a five-year clinical trial (2006-11) comparing the effectiveness of the specially designed YHLB programme with conventional GP care.

 

Not only did participants find that yoga helped reduce their back pain, but after three months of starting the trial, they were able to undertake 30% more everyday activities (like walking, getting dressed, standing for longer periods of time), than those who only received usual GP treatment.

Who is it for?

It is now understood that people with back pain need to keep physically active, to learn how to improve posture and boost mental wellbeing.

 

Designed for people who are new to yoga or those that are experiencing ongoing/recurring low back pain, you will learn in detail what to do and how to manage your own condition.

About the course

  • The YHLB programme is a 12-week course, taught by a highly experienced yoga teacher who has attained specialist, back care training with the YHLB Institute.          

  • There are a maximum number of 10 spaces available on the course, which allows the teacher to tailor each lesson to the individual needs of their students.  

  • In addition to the specialist yoga classes, you will receive an in-depth book explaining the movements and positions demonstrated in class, a relaxation CD and handouts for you to use whenever you may need them.  

THE YOGA FOR HEALTHY LOWER BACKS PROGRAMME WILL TEACH YOU LIFE-LONG SKILLS TO SELF-MANAGE YOUR INDIVIDUAL BACK PAIN NEEDS.  

How will the course benefit me? 

Each class is for 1hr and 15 mins, designed to help you:

  • Discover what you can do when you feel low back pain

  • Learn specific gentle yoga postures that can help relieve symptoms 

  • Improve posture and alignment, learning how to sit, stand and lie down correctly

  • Develop relaxation, mindfulness and breathing techniques
